In an age of technical and, at times, impersonal medicine, massage offers a drug-free, non-invasive and humanistic approach based on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. So what exactly are the benefits to receiving regular massage and/or bodywork treatments?

- Increases circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs.

- Stimulates the flow of lymph, the body’s natural defense system, against toxic invaders. For example, in breast cancer patients, massage has been shown to increase the cells that fight cancer.

- Increased circulation of blood and lymph systems improves the condition of the body’s largest organ – the skin.

- Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles

- Reduces spasms and cramping

- Increases joint flexibility.

- Reduces recovery time, helps prepare for strenuous workouts and eliminates subsequent pains of the athlete at any level.

- Releases endorphins – the body’s natural painkiller – and is being used in chronic illness, injury and recovery from surgery to control and relieve pain.

- Reduces post-surgery adhesions and edema and can be used to reduce and realign scar tissue after healing has occurred.

- Improves range-of-motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain.

- Relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication.

- Provides exercise and stretching for atrophied muscles and reduces shortening of the muscles for those with restricted range of motion.

- Assists with shorter labor for expectant mothers, as well as less need for medication, less depression and anxiety, and shorter hospital stays.

What are the benefits of waxing?

Smooth, Silky Skin that Lasts

Waxing removes hair from the root, so it takes a longer time for hair to grow again- anywhere from 3-8 weeks, depending on the individual speed of hair growth. This means your hair free, smooth skin lasts much longer and you can go for that holiday on the beach and bask in the glory of your enviably smooth and glowing skin without having to worry about body hair showing up in the meantime.

No Skin Damage

In contrast to other methods of hair removal like hair-removing creams and shaving, waxing does not cause cuts, pigmentation, or badly smelling skin. No harsh chemicals are present in wax, so, the skin is saved from their damaging effect.

Finer and Softer Body Hair

The hair that grows after waxing is of a finer and softer variety, not rough and hard as after shaving. And the really good thing is – waxing does not cause an ugly stubble as seen in just a day after shaving.

Double Function of Hair Removal and Exfoliation

Waxing leaves the skin soft, smooth and rejuvenated because it also removes a layer of dead cells from the surface of the skin, and thus, indirectly serves the function of exfoliating the skin as well.

Waxing Diminishes Hair Growth

After repeated sessions of waxing, you will notice a much sparser hair growth, and hair growth may even stop eventually. In contrast, shaving stimulates hair growth, because it removes hair at the surface only, not at the root.

Removing body hair by waxing is becoming so popular that even men are getting their bodies waxed in increasing numbers.

Everyone knows that it feels nice to get a pedicure.

Getting some extra time spent on pampering the toes and legs is always welcomed. Even the polished toenails look wonderful and make you feel so pleased with yourself. There are also physical benefits to getting a pedicure on a regular schedule. While your manicurist/pedicurist is working on your feet, they are doing more than just playing with your toes.

By removing the dead skin and calluses with either pumice, or other implements, your pedicurist is helping to improve the appearance as well as your comfort. Having calluses on your feet can cause uneven pressure when you walk or stand that can also lead to the pain you feel when on your feet all day. Many pedicurists also use foot reflexology while giving pedicures. This helps stimulate the blood flow to the feet and legs and provides the relaxation you feel when someone is massaging. The massage in a pedicure or manicure is one of the most important parts. Massaging certain spots on someone’s foot sends signals to other parts of the body to encourage overall health improvement anywhere in the body. Depending on the amount of pressure, the area being worked on, and the ailment of concern you can see results from eyes to liver to solar plexus.

In the case of spa pedicures with various scents there are additional benefits above and beyond the physical. It has been a studied for years that certain scents and oils can be beneficial for improving circulation, focus, memory and mood. Pedicures that incorporate scents often have several of these benefits included with them. The smell of lime invigorates the mind, sugar excites, vanilla relaxes. All of these may seem like simple scents you are paying more for but are actually making your pedicure great, instead of just good.

Leaving the salon with pretty toes may seem like the only reward you get, but you are also gaining a good mood and better health. Besides, it never hurts to have pretty toes.

Body treatments go back to ancient times starting with milk baths to soften the skin of Cleopatra. Also water therapies using sea water long revered for its high mineral content and therapeutic value in healing and alleviating ailments like arthritis and skin conditions.

Many body treatments used today utilize ingredients derived from the sea including sea salts, marine algae, seaweeds, and plants providing valuable nutrients which are easily utilized by our bodies. Studies conducted have found that the chemical composition of sea water is identical to the chemical makeup of the water found in our own bodies.

Therefore, it is believed that the body easily assimilates these minerals and nutrients to aide in any deficiencies. It also aides in balancing the body by assisting in elimination of trapped toxins or even fat trapped in our cells which not only affect our appearance but also store even more toxins.

Thalassotherapy centers have long been visited in most countries in Europe to aide in health issues as well as “Preventative Health” along with the use of saunas and steam rooms.

What goes into an Urban Oasis Signature Facial?

Exfoliation-Physical (ultrasound or microdermabrasion crystals) and/or chemical (acids and enzymes) exfoliants to stimulate cell renewal, remove dry skin, break down stubborn discoloration (brown spots) and fade post-breakout red/dark marks. Exfoliation also allows action ingredients to absorb deeper within the skin for maximum skin results.

Face, neck and shoulder massage- Not only is it incredibly relaxing, but facial massage helps to increase microcirculation to bring new nutrients to the skin at the cellular level.

Steam- The heat that the steam produces will raise the temperature of the skin and soften the hardened oil in the pore, making it easier for extraction and deep pore cleansing. Steam is also excellent for hydrating the skin as long as the moisture is sealed in with a cream afterwards, to prevent the moisture from evaporating.

Manual extraction- When it comes to clogged pores and blackheads, there is no more effective way to remove them than with manual removal (gentle squeezing) as skin care products will not remove blackheads. In all of the Urban Oasis facials, we use special skin-softening treatments along with steam to prepare the pores for manual extractions—to minimize redness afterward.

Mask- Used at the end of the facial, masks help to lower the temperature of the skin to reduce redness and to deeply hydrate. In all of our facials, we use our signature peel-off seaweed mask. It gives the skin an amazing glow!

What are some benefits of massage for men? Check out some pointers from Men’s Health.

Neck Pain? Ten neck massages over 10 weeks. Sound good? People with chronic neck pain reported a 55 percent improvement after this regimen, according to a 2009 study in the Clinical Journal of Pain. They even scored 39 percent better on the worst-sounding test ever, the Neck Disability Index. (It assesses the pain’s impact.)

Athletic Performance! ”Musculotendinous” massages target muscle-tendon junctions, and a 2010 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that even a 30-second round improved hip-flexor range of motion.

Stress. You don’t need a full-body rubdown to feel good. In a 2010 study from Sweden, one 80-minute hand-and-foot massage significantly lowered people’s heart rates, cortisol levels, and insulin levels—all of which help lower stress.

Depressed? Take your pick: Swedish, shiatsu, and other massage types may ease depression, a 2010 meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found. How? Massages reduce stress hormone levels, heart rate, and blood pressure, and boost mood and relaxation by triggering the release of oxytocin and serotonin.

High Blood Pressure? A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that after people with normal blood pressure had deep-tissue massage for 45 to 60 minutes, their BPs fell—specifically, by an average of 10.4 millimeters of mercury (mm/Hg) systolic, and 5.3 mm/Hg diastolic.

Lower Back Pain? Back problems can be complex. One solution is simple: Common massage techniques can help you relax, and trigger an endorphin release that raises your threshold for pain. And that might help people with all sorts of lower-back pain, notes a 2009 meta-analysis in the journal Spine.
